I knew Tom for many years since we were in Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts together. He was very musical and played the guitar and other instruments. His Dad was a shop teacher at Deerpath Middle School. Tom was well respected by his peers and we miss him.

Tom and his parents lived across the street from us on Park Avenue. Tom would always come over to show my Dad the newest badges and awards that he had earned in Scouting. Tom would go into detail of what it took to earn his awards. They would sit on the front steps and discuss each badge. Tom had a right to be proud of every badge. It's a nice memory of a safe place that we called "home."

Tom Burckhalter and several other Scouts in our Explorer post went on to become Eagle Scouts. This is an honor shared with John Glenn the astranaut known as the oldest man in space. It takes over 30 merit badges and other requirements to become an Eagle Scout. He was also selected and inducted into the Order of the Arrow, an honorary camping society.

Picture below shows Tom and others on a canoe trip in Canada back around 1960 Tom is in the front row in the middle wearing a white neckerchief.
